Fire At Lafayette SLEMCO Facility

At approximately 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 8, 2005 a fire broke out in the transformer shop at the Lafayette SLEMCO headquarters facility. No one was injured and designated employee first responders were on the scene immediately until fire department personnel arrived at the scene.

“The electric industry can be dangerous by nature,” said SLEMCO Communications Manager Mary Laurent. “That is why we devote so much time and resources to safety and training.”

The fire was caused by a transformer that was being tested. During the test, oil escaped from the transformer and caught fire because of the electric load being placed on the equipment.

“These things happen on occasion,” said Laurent. “That’s why we test our transformers in a specially constructed cage designed to keep any fire that might occur contained as much as possible. In this instance, everything from our employees to our fire alarm system fell right into place, responding and reacting exactly according to plan.”

SLEMCO provides electric power to 85,000 homes and business in Acadia, Avoyelles, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin and Vermilion Parishes.
