Tips to Prepare for Freezing Temperatures

  • Locate the shut-off valve of the main water line to your house in case a pipe bursts.

  • Disconnect all hoses from outdoor faucets and store in a warm area.
  • Cover all exterior faucets with foam pipe insulation, rags, or newspaper and secure tightly.
  • Place foam insulation on any exposed pipes and tape the joints where two pieces of foam meet.
  • Keep the central furnace/heater on during the night and open cabinet doors where piping is located (kitchen, bathrooms, utility rooms) to allow warm air inside the home to circulate around the pipes and outside wall.
  • Keep electric space heaters at least three feet from combustible items (walls, curtains, bedding, and furniture).
  • Plug electric space heaters directly into wall outlets. Never use extension cords.
  • Never use your stove to heat the home.
  • During the cold spell, keep all curtains closed on exterior windows.
  • For off-grade homes, fasten a skirting around the perimeter of the home to keep out cold temperatures and winds.
  • Always have a plumber’s telephone handy just in case of an emergency.

Put together an emergency indoor kit and include the following:

  • Batteries for flashlights and lanterns
  • Bottled water
  • Non-Perishable food items and supplies
  • Non-electric can opener
  • Plenty of blankets and clothing
  • Hand warmers
  • Battery Powered Radio
  • Prescription Drugs
  • Install Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Detectors or check batteries in existing units
  • Check Fire Extinguishers and charge or replace, if necessary
