Press Release

Temporary Gustav-Ike Storm Rider applied on SLEMCO bills

A temporary “Gustav-Ike Storm Rider” began appearing in June as a separate line item on all SLEMCO customer bills with the approval of the Louisiana Public Service Commission. The line item is not a rate increase: it is not permanent.

The line item, which amounts to one-tenth of a penny per kilowatt hour of electricity used, will allow SLEMCO to recover—over the next three years—nearly $7 million in storm repairs from Hurricanes Gustav and Ike in 2008 that were not reimbursed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).  The average amount per customer is $1.63 per month.

Similar line items are found on the bills of other LPSC-regulated utility companies that have been hit by hurricanes or ice storms.

Even with the temporary storm rider added, the PSC says SLEMCO customers still pay less for electricity than anyone else in the state.
