SLEMCO Begins Shifting Electrical Load to Ease Congestion on Acadiana’s
Electrical Grid
In an effort to ease the congestion of Acadiana’s electrical grid during
the forecasted cold snap over the next few days, SLEMCO is in the process of
shifting the electrical load of some of its customers to substations that fall
outside the immediate vicinity of Lafayette.
“Our customers will not notice that their electrical power is being re-routed,” explains
Mary Laurent, SLEMCO’s communication manager. “It’s
an internal load transfer to relieve the most stressed areas in the system. We
are taking this step in an abundance of caution to help ensure reliable power
to the entire Acadiana area throughout the next few days.”
SLEMCO is also asking its customers “to do their part” to conserve
energy during the next several days as frigid conditions continue to grip the
area.
“We
are strongly urging our customers to conserve energy usage as much as possible
over the next few days,” Laurent continued. “The
easiest and most effective way to do that is to set heating thermostats to
no higher than 68 degrees when you’re home and lower when you are not
at home. Electric
water heaters can also be turned off when not in use to conserve power.”
The extreme cold temperatures result in a huge increase in electrical usage. This
increased electrical consumption puts a serious burden on the electrical grid
in Acadiana.
Conserving now will ease the pressure on the grid and it will surely reduce
your next month’s electric bill.
