Hurricane Ike
Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008 10:51 AM

The only SLEMCO customers out of power at the current time are those needing to repair their homes or businesses before we can provide them with power.

If you have an outage, please call 888-275-3626.

Hurricane Ike
Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008 4:00 PM

Repairs have been completed on our Esther substation and customers south of Abbeville served by that substation have had their power restored. Damaged locations still won't have power until homeowners make repairs and call to request service.

Repairs are being completed on our Erath substation at this time. Within the next two to three hours, we will be energizing the feeders of that substation. At that time, all SLEMCO customers served by the Erath substation who do not have damage to their home or business will have power.

Hurricane Ike
Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008 11:30 AM

Both the Pecan Island and Cow Island substations in Vermilion Parish are energized and customers that can receive power have power. Others have repairs to make before we can provide them with power. Anyone in those areas who do not have power and have no damage should call our outage number at 1-888-275-3626.

SLEMCO personnel are working on both the Esther and Erath substations at the current time. Barring any major complications, we expect these two substations and customers served by them to have power restored before nightfall tonight. Customers with damage to their homes in those areas will not have power. Those customers will have to call in when repairs are made and we will provide them with electric service at that time.

The total number of SLEMCO customers without power at this time is 2,361.

Hurricane Ike
Monday, Sept. 15, 2008 3:30 PM

Some 2,600 SLEMCO customers are still without power this evening. Power has been restored to the Town of Erath. Cow Island and Pecan Island substations do have power. The only SLEMCO members out of power are Erath customers outside the city limits and those served by the Esther substation located south of Abbeville. We still cannot access the Esther substation because of flooded roadways.

Each of these substations were built in areas where residential and commercial development showed a need for more electrical capacity. The Esther substation was built in 1969, the Cow Island substation in 1973, the Pecan Island substation in 1982 and the Erath substation in 1985. None of these substations ever flooded during hurricanes prior to Hurricanes Rita and Ike and they did not flood during Hurricanes Lili and Gustav. We are working to find a solution that will take into account both floodwaters and high winds in these substations for the future since both wind and water can do great damage to our substations.

Hurricane Ike
Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008 5:00 PM

The only outages that SLEMCO currently has are the 5,141 customers out of power in Vermilion Parish whose substations are still under water. The water has begun to recede but not enough to allow for the necessary work to be done in the substations. As soon as waters recede to 18 inches and repairs can be made, those customers will have power.

SLEMCO Vermilion Parish Outage Information

Some 5,000 SLEMCO customers in southern Vermilion Parish are without lights tonight because flood waters from Hurricane Ike have inundated SLEMCO substations in Erath, Esther, Cow Island and Pecan Island.

Many people in these areas could be without electricity for 16 to 18 hours after the flood waters recede.

The areas impacted include everything south of the Vermilion River, including areas north of Abbeville; the Town of Erath and everything south of Parish Road P-113, which is north of Erath, and areas in the parish south of La. Highway 14.

Customers affected by the flood waters include 725 served from SLEMCO’s Esther substation south of Abbeville, 2,629 served by the company’s Erath substation, 1,125 in the area around Cow Island and another 555 in the Pecan Island area. All of these substations were flooded Saturday.

SLEMCO crews managed to restore power Saturday afternoon to 628 customers in the area from Erath going north toward Youngsville. They also managed to restore power to 410 customers in the area from Cow Island north toward Kaplan.

Once the flood waters recede, SLEMCO crews will need at least 16 to 18 hours to repair damage caused to the substations by flood waters.

Friday, Sept. 12, 2008 7:00 PM

We currently have approximately 3,000 - 5,000 customers without power. In Vermilion Parish, the winds are getting too high to safely work in and we will soon be calling all line crews back in to safety. Outages in other areas will be worked tonight as weather conditions allow.

SLEMCO Esther Substation De-Energized Due To Flooding

At 3:15 p.m. today, SLEMCO de-energized its Esther substation due to flooding. Storm surge floodwaters from Hurricane Ike had been rising throughout the day and when the water reached three feet into the electrical equipment and very near the control panel, the decision was made to safely de-energize the station in a controlled manner in order to prevent major damage to the electrical system, reduce the overall length of the outage and eliminate any danger to the public and SLEMCO employees.

The substation provides power to some 725 homes and businesses south of Abbeville in a mandatory evacuation area. Once the floodwaters recede to about 18 inches, power will be restored to that substation.

Hurricane Gustav
Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008 9:17 AM

As of 10:15 Sunday night, Entergy restored power to their transmission line which allowed us to provide power to Melville, Krotz Springs and Three Mile Lake.

Any other SLEMCO customers without power, who do not have damage to their homes, should call our outage reporting line at 1-888-275-3626.
.

Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008 8:18 AM

With the exception of Krotz Springs and Melville, all SLEMCO customers whose homes are able to receive power have had their power restored. We are waiting on transmission services from Entergy, not our own system. Until Entergy is able to provide us with transmission services, we cannot reconnect our customers in Krotz Springs and Melville.

Once we have transmission power in the Krotz Springs and Melville areas, all of Krotz Springs and the Three Mile Lake area will have power. Some 95 percent of Melville will have power once we receive transmission services. The remaining five percent in Melville have home damage that must be repaired before we can provide them with power.

Any other SLEMCO customers without power, who do not have damage to their homes, should call our outage reporting line at 1-888-275-3626.
.

Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008 5:26 PM

The only groups of customers that remain out this evening are in the Krotz Springs and Melville areas. We have 3,500 customers still without power in that area due to lack of transmission into our distribution facilities. Any other SLEMCO customers without power, who do not have damage to their homes, should call our outage reporting line at 1-888-275-3626.
.

Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008 8:30 AM

We currently have 3,973 customers without power. Some 3500 of those are located in St. Landry Parish in the Krotz Springs area and cannot be reconnected until transmission line repairs can be made. The remaining 473 customers still out will be worked on today. We expect that some of the 473 still out of power will not be able to be reconnected because the homeowners will need to make repairs before we can restore the power to their locations.

Call 888-275-3626 to report outages to SLEMCO.
.

Friday, Sept. 5, 2008  5:00 PM

As of 5 p.m., SLEMCO has restored power to 75,984 customers and has another 9,274 customers without power. Linemen will return to the SLEMCO facilities tonight with data on the progress made today, which is expected to be significant. At 9 a.m. tomorrow morning we will provide updates on numbers and geographic locations where power has been restored.

Call 888-275-3626 to report outages to SLEMCO.

Friday, Sept. 5, 2008  10:00 AM

All SLEMCO customers in Vermilion, Cameron and Iberia Parishes should have power. SLEMCO customers south of I-10 in Lafayette and Acadia Parishes should have power. SLEMCO customers in St. Martin Parish west of LA Highway 31 should have power. Substantial progress is being made in St. Landry, Avoyelles and Evangeline parishes as well as in Lafayette and Acadia parishes north of I-10 and in St. Martin parish east of LA Highway 31.

We have restored power to 75,357 customers in three days. There are still 9,901 customers or 11 percent of our system out of power.

Anyone not having power in the areas listed as completely restored should call SLEMCO at 1-888-275-3626 and request that an outage report be made for their location.
.

Friday, Sept. 5, 2008  8:37 AM

SLEMCO crews and contractor crews made significant headway yesterday restoring power to customers throughout Acadiana. We have restored power to all but 13 percent of our system. The number of customers still without power has dropped to 12,362.

Power has been restored to approximately half of the Butte LaRose area and we will make excellent progress there today as well, with eight construction and three right-of-way crews, approximately 75 workers, assigned to the area today.

The Church Point-Branch-Mire area will be another focal point of today’s efforts with 26 crews, some 250 people, being assigned today to that location alone. All of the main lines have been restored and we will be focusing on house to house connections of homes that did not have power restored when the feeders were re-energized.

Work in all other areas is steadily progressing. Below is a parish breakdown of outage numbers as of 8:30 a.m. today:

SLEMCO Damage Greatest in St. Landry, St. Martin Parish

Although there is damage throughout the SLEMCO electrical system, St. Martin and St. Landry parish were hit especially hard. Trees were a major problem during yesterday’s hurricane. As trees were toppled by wind, they took power lines down with them.

Crews are on the road this morning working in all areas. In addition to the Lafayette headquarters office, service centers in Kaplan, Washington and Crowley are dispatching crews.

As of this morning 85,251 SLEMCO customers are without power. Work today will concentrate on getting substation feeders re-energized. As the feeders come back on, the majority of customers will see their power restored. Those customers that do not get power when the feeders are re-energized will have to be restored on an individual, house-to-house, basis.  Individual work is not expected to begin today.

SLEMCO cautions that you should consider any downed power line energized and potentially deadly! Do not try to move a power line that has fallen on the ground under any circumstances.

If using a generator to supply emergency power, run it only outside your home. For the safety of your family and SLEMCO linemen, plug essential appliances directly into the generator. Only licensed electricians are qualified to wire generators properly into your home’s electrical panel. Linemen can be killed when a power line is backfed from an improperly wired generator. If you need more information, please call or e-mail SLEMCO. More generator safety information can be found at this link.
